Pretoria - A pastor at Leratong Hospice in Atteridgeville, west of Pretoria, was shot and wounded during a robbery at his flat on Thursday morning, said police.
Father Kieran Creagh, a director at the hospice was attacked by a group of eight men who fled with his cellphone and an undisclosed amount of money from his safe, said captain Lucas Sithole.
"They handcuffed a security guard and went for Father Creagh's flat on the premises at 00:15."
Father Creagh was shot "twice in the upper body", he said.
"He is in a stable, but serious, condition in hospital."
No arrests have been made and police are investigating a case of attempted murder and armed robbery.
Sithole refused to disclose the name of the hospital "for security reasons", but The Star newspaper reported on Thursday afternoon that Creagh was taken initially to the Little Company of Mary Hospital in Groenkloof where it was discovered that his lung had collapsed.

He was then transfered to the Zuid Afrikaans Hospital in Sunnyside, Pretoria, where he was to have thoracic surgery.
The Star also reported that Creagh had risked his life and volunteered to be the first person in Africa to be injected with a vaccine intended to prevent people from contracting HIV.
Creagh also went against normal Catholic doctrine by saying: "I wouldn't be against condoms. If you can't abstain, then protect yourself and the person you are with."
The Leratong Hospice was opened in 2004 after Creagh got the materials and cash to build it.
The hospice is sponsored by Ireland, the country of Creagh's birth.
