  • Johannesburg - Irish priest Father Kieran Creagh is in a critical but stable condition at the Zuid Afrikaans Hospital in Sunnyside, Pretoria, his doctor said on Saturday.

Doctor William Mapham said he was still in the intensive care unit section and was breathing through a ventilator.

"He still can't talk but can write down jokes," Mapham added.

On Thursday eight people attacked Creagh and later fled with his cellphone and an undisclosed amount of money from his safe at his flat.

He was shot twice in the upper body.

No arrests have been made and police were investigating a case of attempted murder and armed robbery.

Creagh, a director at the Leratong Hospice, became a household name in 2004 when he volunteered to be the first person in Africa to be injected with a new HIV/Aids vaccine.

The priest founded the Leratong Hospice for people in the final stages of HIV/Aids.

It was built in 2004 with money raised by Creagh.
