Pretoria - When a shop manager walked into Pretoria Central police station to report an armed robbery nearby, a police captain allegedly didn't even look up from his newspaper - instead, he apparently just told the man to "fuck off".
Dimitrios Giannios, the manager of Buy & Save on the corner of Pretorius and Bosman streets, said he was helped by another police officer three hours later.
Giannios said the shop he managed was practically across the road from the police station.
An employee, John Chaves, was alone in the shop on Wednesday about 16:30 when three robbers attacked him.
"One robber pointed a firearm at John. They tied his hands with an extension cord and assaulted him while they demanded the keys to the safe."
Walked over to police station
"The robbers broke the safe out of the counter, took the money out of the cash register as well, and fled."
Giannos arrived at the shop shortly after the robbers had fled.
He phoned the flying squad, but no one had pitched up after half an hour.
So, he walked over to the police station to get help. Giannos said a police officer told him to go back to the shop and wait there for an officer.
"After a long time, no one had showed up, so I went back to the police station.
"An inspector showed me where a captain was seated and told me to go and report my complaint to him.
"The captain was reading a newspaper when I got to him."
Giannos said the captain did not even put down his newspaper.
"I told him what had happened and he half looked up." "When I asked if he was going to help me or continue reading, he got annoyed and told me to 'Fuck off'. "
Giannos said he returned to the shop and, half an hour later, tried again at the police station.
Viewed claim in a serious light
"It was now about 20:00. An inspector Greyling finally helped me to report the incident."
Police spokesperson Paul Ramaloko said they viewed Giannos's allegations in "a serious light".
He suggested that Giannos should contact the commanding officer of the police station so that the matter could be followed up.
