  • Johannesburg - Anti-crime protesters started to march in Johannesburg for a crime-free and corruption-free country shortly before 11:00 on Saturday.

"We are law-abiding citizens and feel that the president should be law-abiding and ensure that our grannies, children and everyone is safe," said Steph Hartung, one of the march organisers.

Victims in the Republic of SA (Virsa) planned to march against crime in Johannesburg, Cape Town and Durban with the aim to collect three million signatures for a petition to hand to government.

Johannesburg marchers plan to walk to city mayor Amos Masondo's office to deliver a memorandum and signed petition.

Most of the protesters wore pink ribbons around their arms in solidarity with victims of crime.

They carried banners with words such as "Mbeki wake up" and "Beware criminals, South Africa is gatvol" and T-shirts with "ABC, I'm Affected By Crime" and "Crime Free South Africa".

Miss Africa 2006 Gillian Elson and Little Miss World Courtney Elson also attended the protest.

Police officers, metro police and paramedics were present.
