Condemned building cleared out
19/03/2007 11:47 - (SA)
Johannesburg - Residents of a condemned building in central Johannesburg are to be evicted on Monday, said Johannesburg metro police.
"Johannesburg metro police are going to block off Harrison street between Bree and Jeppe streets in order to serve a court order and evict tenants of Monis Place as the building has been declared an unsafe building for human occupation," said chief superintendent Wayne Minnaar.
The operation started at 06:00. Minnaar said tenants had previously been served with eviction notices.
He did not know how many residents were in the building.
"Motorists are advised to avoid Harrison street and to rather use Simmonds street as an alternative route."
Minnaar said the operation was expected to take all day and "a lot" of officers were involved.
