Johannesburg - Ekurhuleni metro police arrested five men on Thursday for a spate of hijackings and robberies near Daveyton, on Johannesburg's East Rand.
One of the men began firing at police and metro police as they approached their homes in Putfontein near Daveyton on Thursday afternoon, said inspector Mveli Nhlapo.
In the exchange of gunfire that followed at about 13:45 the man was shot in the upper body. He was taken to hospital under police guard.
Four other men were arrested. All were aged between 24 and 32.
Nhlapo said they were wanted for at least six cases of hijacking and armed robbery in the area. Charges of attempted murder and possession of unlicensed firearms would be added.
Two unlicensed handguns and a bakkie stolen in Putfontein were also confiscated.
The five were due to appear in Daveyton magistrate's court soon.
