SA chides foreign govts on Zim

  • Pretoria - If international governments had adopted a common approach on Zimbabwe the crisis in that country could have been averted, said deputy foreign affairs minister Aziz Pahad on Friday.

Pahad said in Pretoria that if Europe, the United States and South Africa had worked with a common approach to Zimbabwe "the doors would not have been closed" and critical discussions and dialogue could have continued.

"We were told that we were working from the same song sheets but it seems we were all playing in different bands," said Pahad.

It was not fair for other governments to criticise South Africa's engagement with Zimbabwe.

These should say what more it is that South Africa could do about the situation.

"It is not our intention to make militant statements to make us feel good and satisfy governments outside the continent."

The only solution for Zimbabwe was constructive dialogue between the different domestic parties, Pahad said.
