Dennilton - Four armed robbers saw red when a money trunk they had just taken from security guards exploded, covering them in powder and forcing them to flee empty-handed.
The botched heist took place at Moteti shopping complex in Dennilton, Mpumalanga, on Saturday afternoon.
Police spokesperson Solomon Matau said on Monday that the gang overpowered two security guards while they were collecting money at the complex.
"Two of the men were armed with rifles and the other two had handguns.
Found getaway bakkie
"They disarmed one of the security guards and took his pistol.
"They took the cash box, but it exploded, covering them with red powder. They dropped the box and fled."
Matau said police found the gang's getaway vehicle, a Mazda Drifter bakkie, in bushes nearby.
"We found 23 rifle rounds in the bakkie but there was no one near the car.
"They will be easily identifiable because of the powder. It is just a matter of time before we arrest them," he said.
