Johannesburg - A 59-year-old Germiston man was shot dead when two men, one armed with a firearm, hijacked him and his wife in front of Afrikaanse Hoërskool in Landton, Germiston, police said on Thursday.
Spokesperson Captain Steady Nawa said the couple had been waiting in the car for their 14-year-old son to finish rugby practice around 17:30m.
"They [the men] grabbed the car keys from the ignition... when the man tried to get out of the car [as the attackers had told him to do] then the man shot him in the back," said Nawa.
The men then told the couple to leave everything inside their gold Toyota Corolla and stole the woman's cellphone before driving away in the car.
The man was treated at the scene, but later died at the Rose Acres hospital.
Police were investigating a case of murder.

Meanwhile, a 35-year-old Soweto woman was raped in the veld next to the Golden Walk Mall in Germiston on Wednesday.
Nawa said the woman had been waiting at the taxi rank around 18:30 when she went into the veld to relieve herself.
"Then she met an unknown male who threatened her with a pair of scissors and instructed her to take off her clothes," he said.
When she refused, the man pulled off her trousers and raped her four times, once with a condom.
When he tried to rape her a fifth time, the woman managed to kick him and he ran away with her trousers, underwear, jacket and takkies.
The woman ran to the taxi rank, wearing only a T-shirt, where she was taken by two taxi drivers to the Germiston police station.
A case of rape was opened.
Police have asked for the public's help in arresting the attacker, believed to be between 25 and 30.
