Upington - A man allegedly armed with a bomb walked into the FNB bank in Upington early on Friday morning, demanded an undisclosed sum of money and fled, police say.
"One person entered the building with a packet," police spokesperson, Captain Jacques September told News24 on Friday afternoon.
The man approached a teller and slid the packet under the window. "He said: 'This is a bomb, I want all your money,'" said September.
The teller gave him an undisclosed amount of money after which the man fled the scene.
"When we arrived on the scene there was no sign of the suspect," said September.
The robbery took place at about 09:30. The police department's bomb disposal team was still inspecting the packet, which contained a contraption, on Friday afternoon.
FNB Area manager, James Venter, told News24 that the bank teller would "definitely" go for counselling. "The staff is all well, everybody is fine."
Venter said the bank, situated on the corner of Hill and Schroder street in Upington, wuold reopen at 13:30 on Friday. "The police are still her, but we will resume normal procedure."
Asked what safety precautions would be taken in future, Venter said that everything was "100%" correct and that all procedure had been followed.
No one was hurt in the incident.
