Johannesburg - A security guard was shot dead by armed robbers in an attempted cash-in-transit heist robbery at an office block in Marlboro, north of Johannesburg on Monday, police said.

Spokesperson Captain Cheryl Engelbrecht said robbers started shooting at a Coin security van that was inside the Linbro office park at 16:15.

A shoot-out followed, she said.

A security guard, from a different company, who responded to the shooting was shot dead and his gun and cellphone were stolen.

Netcare 911 spokesperson Nick Dollman said a flight doctor from an emergency helicopter had attempted life-saving surgery on the scene but the guard died of his injuries on the scene.

Engelbrecht said two Coin security guards inside the van were treated in hospital for injuries caused by shattered glass due to the shooting.

One of the attackers was allegedly dressed in a Coin security uniform, she said.

It was not clear whether the van was delivering or picking up money, but no money was stolen, she said.

Police said roughly 10 people were involved in the heist attempt.
