  • Johannesburg - A 34-year-old man was accused of being a criminal, beaten and then set alight by a mob of angry residents in Palm Ridge on the East Rand, said police on Tuesday.

Captain Jethro Mtshali said the man had been beaten and then burnt with a substance, possibly petrol, between 13:00 and 14:00 on Tuesday.

"They alleged that he was involved in another crime, maybe a robbery, and had been terrorising the community," said Mtshali.

The man's face was badly burnt and he died where he had been attacked.

Mtshali said it was not known how many residents had been involved but that it was a "mob".

No one has been arrested and police are investigating a murder charge.
