Shack dwellers face eviction
04/04/2007 08:33 - (SA)
Johannesburg - The Musina municipality in Limpopo is expected to evict about 1 000 households at the town's Sehlalangenkani section on Wednesday morning, the SABC reported.
The municipality obtained a court order last year, but a committee representing the residents challenged it at the high court.
Municipal spokesperson Avid Mukobi told the SABC that residents representatives had failed to honour the court date at the Pretoria High Court, prompting the municipality to continue with the evictions.
No alternative accommodation has been arranged for the residents.
The residents erected corrugated iron shacks on municipal land three years ago, accusing the municipality of failing to provide houses for them.
Police spokesperson Captain Mashudu Malelo said that he had only heard about the evictions over the SABC radio news. "I am still going to go out there later on in the day," said Malelo.
