Durban - A 34-year-old man was killed in an apparent hijacking in the Umlazi area, said police on Tuesday.

Superintendent Danelia Veldhuizen said that passers-by in W-Section found the man lying at the side of the road with a gunshot wound to the stomach on Sunday night.

He was rushed to the nearby Isipingo Towers Hospital, but died shortly after being admitted.

Veldhuizen said there were no witnesses to the shooting, but police believed the man was shot during a hijacking as his car, a Mercedes-Benz, was found abandoned on the N2 highway.

A case of murder has been opened.
