Johannesburg - A suspected member of an armed gang that attacked the owner of a farm outside Amersfoort in Mpumalanga was caught on Thursday while trying to flee to Johannesburg, said police.
Superintendent Abie Khoabane said the 32-year-old man was arrested on Thursday afternoon after a tip-off.
"He was about to get into a taxi to Johannesburg when police arrested him."
The man and five others allegedly attacked Elizabeth Magdalene Kols, 55, while she was outside her house on Holfontein farm at 20:00 on Wednesday.
They forced her inside the house and made her open a safe in search of money and firearms.
Police, who had received a tip-off that a Gauteng gang was about to raid the farm, were present.
Shot dead in house
The robbers opened fire and tried to flee when the police in the house tried to arrest them.
One of the robbers was shot dead inside the house and another outside. A third robber was arrested, but the rest escaped.
A search is now on for the remaining two men, said Khoabane.
Kols, who was wounded in her left leg by the robbers, was still in hospital.
"She is going to have a bullet removed, but she is out of danger," said Khoabane.
