Phalaborwa - Two robbers who held up a lodge have been handed a combined jail sentence of 42 years.
Sam "Big Joe" Sewelani, 20, and Sylvester "Giyani" Mkhabela, 37, both from Rolle in Mpumalanga, held up the Makalali Lodge outside Bushbuckridge in October 2005.
"They overpowered two security guards and frog-marched them to the guest houses where two guests were robbed of about R10 000," said Mopani police spokesperson Superintendent Moatshe Ngoepe.
Big Joe then decided to take the guests as hostages when they left. Big Joe was sentenced to 14 years for armed robbery and another 14 years for kidnapping.
Giyani got 14 years for armed robbery in the Phalaborwa regional court on Wednesday.
Ngoepe said police were happy with the sentences.
"These kinds of sentences encourage us as policemen to do our job," he said.
Meanwhile, the Giyani Regional Court sentenced a father who raped his teenaged daughter to 12 years in jail.
The 39-year-old man from Makumeke village near Malamulele raped his 15-year-old daughter on February 27.
