Johannesburg - The health of South Africa's most-notorious, awaiting-trial prisoner, Annanias Mathe, is deteriorating rapidly, the SABC reported on Tuesday.

Mathe was reported to be wheelchair-bound and very weak.

Mathe, a Mozambican national, is accused of attempted murder, rape, armed robbery, vehicle theft and house robbery.

His lawyers told the SABC that he had fluid on the lungs and had lost a lot of weight.

He also was too scared to eat prison food.

On medication

The department of correctional services told the SABC that Mathe was eating and was taking prescribed medication.

He is expected to appear later this month in connection with his escape from the country's most-secure prison, C-Max, the SABC reported.

He is the only man to have escaped from C-Max.
