  • Johannesburg - Western Cape police have arrested one of six awaiting trial prisoners who escaped from custody at Bellville magistrate's court.

Police spokesperson Bernadine Steyn said Ashley Daniels was arrested at a house in Belhar on Friday.

"Following information we received, 25-year-old Daniels was arrested on Friday after escaping from custody at Bellville magistrate's court on Wednesday," she said.

Daniels escaped after he and five others assaulted one of two police officers who were escorting them from a court cell.

Daniels was initially arrested for an alleged armed robbery incident that occurred on Monday.

Steyn said Daniels would appear in Bellville magistrate's court on Monday while the five remaining escapees were still at large.

The five are: Vicoleen Abrahams who is awaiting trial on charges of armed robbery; Sharudin Ahmes and Faizel Shaboedine on charges of housebreaking and theft; Ismail Paulse on charges of rape; and Warren Williams on charges of theft.
