Nelspruit - A man accused of robbing a woman of R30 000 outside a bank claims police have arrested the wrong man.

Patrick Lucky Malinga, 25, of Msogwaba appeared in Nelspruit magistrate's court on Friday on charges of robbing a woman of her handbag, which contained R30 000, outside Absa bank in the city centre.

Sergeant Michael Lusiba testified that when he took Malinga to the police station, Malinga said he deserved to be let off because he had not robbed a poor black person, but a rich white woman.

"He told me this was a free country and he didn't deserve to go to jail for robbing a white person, only a black person," he said.

Malinga has pleaded not guilty to theft.

Malinga has testified that he was withdrawing money from an ATM when he saw a man running past him and drop something that looked like a handbag.

Malinga said he was surprised when private security guards came to arrest him and handed him over to the police.

"Your worship, I swear that the guards and the police arrested the wrong man because I am innocent enough to be let free," he said.

Magistrate Vanessa Joubert postponed the case to May 25 for further evidence.

Malinga was remanded because he has failed to raise R2 000 bail.

      Theft and all
    23/04/2007 16:49
For a poor black guy he is taking pretty expensive drugs. Only 25 and still sorry for himself. Maybe he should've gone to a white school a learned how to get rich when he was 12. Better yet just give him a dictionary and make him learn what prejudice and steal mean. Stealing is stealing dude..... Not all whites are rich!!!!!! - Poor Black guy

      This makes me sick.

This makes me sick. If this is not racist I dont know what is. How can it be right to rob anyone, regardless of colour, bank balance or backround. Where does this, obviously ignorant, clown get of saying it is a free country and didn't deserve going to jail for robbing a white women. This is one of the reasons why so many white people are leaving the country. Racisim is still alive and kicking in South Africa, and it is no longer the whites who are the main culprits. People NEED forgive! - Richard

      mmmm...

      wake up brother
    23/04/2007 18:00
Just cos you poor does not give you the right to take what is not yours, not all rich people were born rich, most worked to get where they are. So rather than feeling sorry for yourself, try working for what you want, and than have someone take it away, than see it how that feels? As blacks we have all the opportunities available to make a success of our lives, and yet we have people who think the whites still owe them everything. Wake up bro!!! and the time is now! - Not so poor black guy

It's the attitude of people like this that's bringing the country to it's knees. - Markie

      Is he serious?
    23/04/2007 18:08
No wonder the crime rate is going up. With idiots like that on the streets it's no wonder. If he had to steal from a rich black person then surely some street justice would be done even before the Police could get hold of him. I agree 100% with Tian, cut his hands off if found guilty. Or bring back the death penalty, then crime will show a decline. - Ryan

All behind this guys losing his hands.
    23/04/2007 21:40
Maybe SA needs Saudi Arabian justice. If you can't keep your hands off of other peoples property you don't deserve to keep your hands. Prison isn't doing these criminals any good. Prison is only college for criminal minds. It just teaches how to improve their craft. Bring back the hangman's noose for violent criminals and severe punishment for theft. A warm bed and a free meal won't fix this. - concerned
