Johannesburg - Police caught 218 careless criminals who left their fingerprints at crime scenes countrywide during the past month.
They were arrested between March 13 and April 13 after their fingerprints were lifted from crime scenes, said Sally de Beer, spokesperson for national police commissioner Jackie Selebi, in a statement on Monday.
A further 78 were arrested during the same period after warrants of arrest were issued for them.
The 296 have so far been linked to 288 cases.
The crimes committed included armed robbery, house and business robberies and vehicle hijacking.
These figures excluded arrests made by police during their day-to-day duties.
