Cape Town - Firefighters are battling 13 fires caused by a lightning storm which hit the Overberg region of the Western Cape in the early hours of Tuesday morning.
Overberg fire chief Reinard Geldenhuys said all the fires were in mountainous areas.
The first fire was ignited the Grabouw area, and as the storm moved eastwards, it sparked blazes above Villiersdorp, Caledon, Riviersonderend and Swellendam, where there were five fires.
Geldenhuys said firefighters had been able to reach some of the fires, and teams from Cape Nature, Working on Fire, and the Overberg municipality's own firefighting department, were on the job.
