24/04/2007 20:57 - (SA)
Cape Town - A cop was wounded during a shoot-out with an armed gang that was trying to rob a Fidelity cash van on the N2 freeway in Heideveld on Tuesday, said police.
Superintendent Billy Jones said the shootout started when six armed men in a VW Golf and a Ford Bantam bakkie brought the cash van to a halt at 17:00.
"The six armed men got out of their vehicles and ran towards the van, but members of the flying squad patrolling the freeway spotted them before they could take anything from it."
When the men saw police, they opened fire. One police officer had a bullet graze his head.
"He wasn't seriously injured and no one else was injured."
The gang fled in the Golf, abandoning the bakkie at the scene.
"The car was found abandoned in Guguletu, but no one has been arrested yet."
Cases of attempted murder and attempted robbery are being investigated.
