Johannesburg - A suspected housebreaker was in a stable condition in hospital on Friday after he was shot, allegedly by police, paramedics said.

Netcare 911 spokesperson Nick Dollman said the incident occurred in Van den Berg street in Elsburg, Germiston shortly after 08:00.

"While chasing after the man a warning shot was fired and a second shot was fired hitting him in the buttocks," said Noble.

The injured man was allegedly involved in a house breaking incident.

Police could not confirm the incident.
