Johannesburg - A security guard was shot dead after holding up his colleagues on board a cash van travelling through Johannesburg's East Rand on Saturday morning.

Spokesperson Captain Joseph Mtshali said a luxury car had been spotted trailing the Coin Security vehicle and vanished after it appeared that the first step in a cash-in-transit heist plan had failed.

However, the dead man shot one security guard in the hand before a third security guard killed him.

The incident happened on the R554 in Dawn Park, Boksburg, at 09:00, said Mtshali.

A case of attempted murder and attempted robbery had been opened.
