Lydenburg - Mpumalanga police shot and wounded three men who allegedly robbed a businessman of R69 000 in Burgersfort on Monday.
A gang of five held the man up in Lydenburg about midday as he was about to bank the money, said captain Leonard Hlathi.
They then drove to Burgersfort in a Toyota Corolla where a police patrol spotted and followed them.
At a stop sign, the alleged robbers got out and shot at police, who returned fire, wounding three of the men. Two managed to escape.
Cash recovered
The three were taken to hospital in a stable condition under police guard.
"One revolver was found at the robbery and an undisclosed amount of cash was recovered."
The three men were in their late twenties and early thirties. Two were from Soweto, Gauteng, and one from Tzaneen in Limpopo.
Hlathi said police from Gauteng, Limpopo and Mpumalanga were co-operating in an attempt to link the men to other crimes committed in the three provinces.
