Bloemfontein - The body of a woman who probably had been raped and murdered was found in Viljoensdrif on Tuesday morning, said Free State police.

A passerby found her near a road between the Vaal River and Richmond village about 08:00, said Sergeant Thandi Mbambo.

"The position in which she was found led police to suspect that she also might have been sexually violated.

"The woman had brown hair and she was found wearing a black blouse and black shoes only. The rest of her clothes were missing," said Mbambo.

She was between 20 and 25 years old and a post-mortem will be done.

Police urged anyone missing a female relative or who could help track down her killers to phone captain Mahlae Kolobe at Viljoensdrif police on 016 457 1003 or 082 465 3195.
