Johannesburg - Two men were arrested after a high-speed chase and shootout with police after an armed robbery and two hijackings in Westonaria on Johannesburg's West Rand, said Gauteng police on Wednesday.
Constable Sefako Xaba said the men, aged 24 and 35, were arrested on Monday after they allegedly robbed two women at gunpoint at Venterspost in Westonaria.
"It is alleged that two elderly women were walking in the street when they were approached and robbed by three suspects, one armed with a firearm.
"Members of the community saw the incidents and gave chase to the suspects. The police were alerted and rushed to the scene," said Xaba.
The men then allegedly hijacked two vehicles.
Police giving chase were fired at.
More charges expected
Xaba said: "Police, with the help of the Pelzvale plots community, managed to arrest two of the three suspects and recovered a firearm and a hijacked vehicle.
Police said the firearm was stolen during a house-breaking in the area in April.
The men are being held at Westonaria police station and are due to appear in Westonaria magistrate's court on Thursday.
"The two suspects are expected to be linked to house-breaking cases committed in the area and more charges could be added," said Xaba.
Police are searching for a third suspect.
