Durban - Three robbers were killed in a shoot-out with police on the N2 highway near Durban after a cash-in-transit heist on Wednesday afternoon, said police.

While details still were sketchy, a source said police had given chase after a group of men staged a cash-in-transit heist at an Engen garage in Durban's Phoenix area.

Police chased the gang on to the N2 where there was a shoot-out.

Three robbers were killed.

Two suspects were arrested.

It is believed that more suspects are being sought.

Police reportedly recovered a number of firearms, including an AK-47 assault rifle, and cash.

The source said that it was believed that more than R1m was stolen from the cash-in-transit van.

It was not immediately clear if any police were injured in the shoot-out.
