Guards recover stolen cash
05/05/2007 15:30 - (SA)
Johannesburg - Two cash-in-transit guards managed to recover money that was stolen from them during a robbery at a shopping complex in Witbank on Saturday, Mpumalanga police said.
Captain Leornard Hlathi said one of the Coin Security guards was going to the Absa bank at the Highlands Mews shopping complex when he was approached by four armed men at around 07:40.
The suspects took a money container from the guards and fled in a Honda Ballade car.
They also fired shots at the guards but no-one was injured, said Hlathi.
The two guards then followed the men to the Klipfontein dam in Witbank, where a man was waiting for the robbers in a Quantum minibus.
The robbers got inside the minibus but were unable to flee as the guards "deliberately" collided with the minibus, forcing it off the road.
Two of the robbers managed to flee from the scene in the Honda while the others fled on foot.
Police "immediately" arrived at the scene and the stolen money was recovered in the minibus, said Hlathi.
"We thank the two Coin Security officers for the brave character that they displayed in foiling the robbery."
Hlathi said the minibus was not reported as stolen and the registration number of the Honda Ballade was not yet known.
He said investigations were continuing and urged anyone with information to contact the Witbank Police station at (013) 655- 5000 or the investigation officer Captain Mahlo at 082 556 5902 or the toll free number 08600 10111.
