Johannesburg - A robber in his late 20s was shot dead by the owner of a house in Ivory Park in Duduza, Gauteng police said on Tuesday.

Captain Jethro Mtshali said the man had been trying to break into the house with another man when the owner heard a noise around 22:50 on Monday night.

"He [the owner] switched on the lights and saw one of the suspects. The men were both armed," said Mtshali.

The owner then shot one of the men.

The man died on the scene and the other man ran away.

Police have opened a case of attempted house robbery and an inquest docket would be investigated.
