Stellenbosch - Don't underestimate a speed of 50km/h. One would think it's pretty slow, but it can be too fast in certain cases.
Those words of wisdom come from the editor of the travel magazine Weg, 47-year-old Bun Booyens, after a vehicle collided with his motorcycle this week.
Booyens, who is a former assistant editor of Die Burger, was knocked off his motorcycle on Tuesday afternoon at a busy crossing on the R44, near the turnoff to Techno Park, when another vehicle apparently crashed into him.
"The car hit me on my left when I was riding through the crossing. I don't think the driver saw me.
"I flew over the roof of the car and hit the ground," Booyens said on Tuesday afternoon at Stellenbosch Medi-Clinic. He will be in traction for at least six weeks.
His motorcycle, a BMW 1150GS, is a write-off.
"It wasn't as if I saw my life flash in front of me at that moment. I still remember everything. Or, perhaps I don't have much of a life," he said with a chuckle.
A sister at the clinic said Booyens had a minor fracture at the join between the hip and the femur, and his hip was dislocated.
Booyens said he was okay now and in a good mood, adding that he had been riding motorcycles since his university days and was not about to give it up now.
"It can happen to anyone. I'll definitely ride again."
His words of wisdom to other bikers: wear protective clothing and a crash helmet at all times.
And realise that accidents can even happen at 50km/h.
