Jane Furse - Two security guards were injured when a cash-heist gang of about 12 men attacked them on the way to pension pay-out points in Apel near Jane Furse in Limpopo on Thursday morning.
Capricorn area spokesperson, Superintendent Ronel Otto, said three vehicles from Cash Paymaster Services and Fidelity Guards were travelling on the gravel road at Mashabela Mphanama, when a vehicle blocked the road and forced the vans to a stop.
"More suspects, armed with rifles, suddenly appeared from the bushes and shots were fired at the security guards," she said.
She said two guards were injured. One was shot in the upper arm and the other in the left thigh.
The suspects took an undisclosed amount of money.
More suspects driving an Opel Corsa and a BMW appeared on the scene and the suspects fled.
"It is alleged that about twelve suspects were involved," said Otto.
The suspects did not flee in the vehicle that was initially used to block the road.
Instead, they fled in the Opel and BMW, which were later found abandoned in a nearby village.
The BMW had been reported stolen in the Eastern Cape last month while the Opel had been reported stolen in Bushbuckridge in Mpumalanga in March.
No arrests have yet been made and police investigations are continuing.
