Johannesburg - Four of the six dogs that belonged to Hannah Botha, perhaps best known for her role as the feisty Elsa Pienaar in long-running soapie Egoli, have been put to sleep in accordance with her last wishes.
Egoli co-producer Burgert Muller confirmed on Tuesday that Hannah's final appearance in Egoli, would be on Thursday evening. He also confirmed that her death would not be worked in as a sub-plot in the soapie.
Botha stated in her will that the four small dogs, along with her two large guard dogs, should all be put to sleep after her death.
The small dogs were a feature of her home in Melville. They were fed on mince and slept on her bed.
The two large dogs are still alive because of their role as guard dogs at her home, and they will be euthanased as soon as the house has been sold.
No decision on character
Winnie Sulelo, Hannah's domestic worker for many years, said on Tuesday that the four lap dogs had been taken by the vet and put to sleep.
"Our hearts cried and cried. They've gone to eternity."
Hannah's house and all its contents probably will be sold soon by public auction.
Muller said the producers had not yet made a final decision on the character Hannah played in Egoli.
"The fact that an actor has died, does not mean that the role necessarily follows suit. We've decided that, for now, Hannah's character will remain. Later on, we'll take a final decision."
