Teaching halted in Khutsong
21/05/2007 12:13 - (SA)
Johannesburg - Teaching in Khutsong schools in the North West had not resumed on Monday, the Khutsong Learners Forum (RCL) said.
"The learners were here but teaching did not take place," said RCL president Sibusiso Kula, adding that the teachers had also arrived at schools.
Kula said the RCL was pleading with Education Minister Naledi Pandor to intervene.
"She must come to Khutsong because it is a serious situation," he said.
He said Congress of SA Trade Unions president Willie Madisha also arrived at the schools on Monday.
On Sunday, Madisha said he would make a second visit to violence-torn Khutsong on Monday morning in an effort to get education in the township back on its feet.
"Teachers have agreed, they are going back to classes, education will happen," he said on Sunday following a meeting with teachers and parents.
Khutsong falls under the Merafong municipality, which was moved from Gauteng to the North West under the consolidation of cross-border municipalities.
This evoked strong criticism and resulted in violent protests from Khutsong residents. Schooling has been disrupted for more than a month.
Madisha could not immediately be reached for comment.
