2 die in Limpopo chopper crash
24/05/2007 15:42 - (SA)
Johannesburg - The Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) is investigating the helicopter crash in Limpopo in which two people died, the authority said on Thursday.
"My colleagues are on site now," said CAA senior manager for accident investigations Albert Morudi.
He said little information was available yet but confirmed that two people died when the Robinson R22 crashed, apparently when it flew into a wire or a fence.
Limpopo police said the crash took place on a farm near Lephalale just after 16:00 on Wednesday.
Captain Gabashane Moseki said the pilot and a crew member, both men in their early 30s, died instantly when the Robinson R22 crashed at the Mpofu Game Lodge.
"It is alleged that they were hunting on the farm and, while flying along the river, the helicopter collided with a steel wire which tied the rear propeller and they crashed."
Moseki did not know what the wire was.
Police were investigating.
