Johannesburg - Six men - two of them in police uniforms - were arrested for trying to rob a store in Benoni, Ekurhuleni metro police said on Friday.
The armed men, who had arrived at Fruit Time store in two stolen vehicles, were nabbed shortly after asking an employee to open a safe on Friday morning, said Chief Superintendent Wilfred Kgasago.
He said: "Ekurhuleni Metro police's specialised unit pounced on them before they could have access to the contents of the safe.
"Their swift response prevented a situation that could have easily ended in casualties."
The two stolen vehicles, three firearms with filed off serial numbers and a police reflective jacket were recovered during the arrests.
Kgasago could not indicate whether the men in police uniforms were bogus officers or not.
All six are expected to appear in Benoni Magistrate's Court on Monday.
They would be charged with possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition, attempted robbery and possession of suspected stolen vehicles.
