Johannesburg - A woman was in a critical condition in hospital on Saturday after she crashed into another vehicle while driving on the wrong side of the freeway, said Johannesburg metro police.

Spokesperson Wayne Minnaar said the woman, who had been driving an Opel Corsa on the wrong side of the N3 near the Marlboro offramp, crashed head-on with an Audi sedan.

"The woman who was driving on the wrong side of the freeway crashed into the Audi which, in turn, caught fire," he said.

The woman was taken to the Johannesburg hospital in a serious condition. The male Audi driver who had been taken out of the burning car was taken to the Sunninghill hospital, also in a critical condition.

"A case of reckless driving is being investigated," said Minnaar.
