Power thieves leave JHB in dark
27/05/2007 10:35 - (SA)
Johannesburg - Residents in some parts of Johannesburg were without electricity on Sunday, City Power said.
Spokesperson Louis Pieterse said power outages and the illegal connection of electricity were rife in the affected areas namely Yeoville, Alexandra, Malvern, Rosettenville, Jeppestown, Kensington and Cleveland.
"There are a lot of illegal connections in some of those area," said Pieterse.
He said illegally connecting electricity was causing a strain on the network, causing outages being experienced by legal, paying consumers in parts of Johannesburg.
"It can affect paying residents causing them to lose their electricity," he said.
It was also unsafe as residents could get electrocuted, he said.
Pieterse said there were no big power outages in the affected areas but single no-supply problems, meaning that it was one or two houses without electricity.
He said City Power was repairing the single, no supply problem and illegal connections were being removed.
