Durban - A burglar in KwaZulu-Natal managed to get away with only a little loot after his elderly victim's Maltese kept biting his bum.
The thief had dragged Daphne Borchers, 86, of Sunwich Port on the South Coast out of her bed.
Borchers said: "I was fast asleep and was nearly frightened to death.
"The scoundrel threatened to kill me, demanded money and beat me and poked me with a sharpened stick."
Borchers said the thief had not reckoned on the response of her little Maltese, Archibald, who was also rudely awakened.
"Archibald went berserk. He went straight for the man and sank his teeth into the hand holding the stick.
Swearing at him in Zulu
"When he was shaken off, he bit the man on the behind. Every time the man lashed out at him, he changed his tactic and bit his legs.
"Then he bit the man's arms, his buttocks, his hands, back to the legs and that's how it went.
"All the time, the man was swearing at him in Zulu, and missing him. It would have been funny if the situation hadn't been so serious," said Borchers.
At length, the burglar decided enough was enough, and he fled from the house with a R100 note that he had stolen from Borchers' handbag - and with Archibald hot on his heels.
Police arrived shortly afterwards, but the burglar is still on the loose.
Weighs in at just 4kg
It is the second time in 10 years that Borchers, who used to live on a farm in the Paddock area, has been attacked in her home.
The first time, when she was still on the farm, she managed to push the three attackers out of a door. "But, I'm a bit beyond that sort of thing nowadays. "All that I know is that Archibald definitely saved my life - all 4kg of him. He's the bravest little chap I know."
