Johannesburg - A Coin Security guard was shot dead in a cash heist at a Caltex garage in Vereeniging on Tuesday morning, Vaal Rand police said.

Captain William Mcera said two guards went to the garage on Old Johannesburg Road in the Vaaldrift area to fetch money when four armed men attacked them.

Mcera said the robbers shot the guard in the chest then took an empty money box.

"The money box has been recovered," said Mcera.

He said the robbers ran away and were still at large.
