Woman dies in failed hijack

Johannesburg - A woman was killed and a small child critically injured when they were hit by a vehicle after the driver was shot in a hijacking attempt in Johannesburg on Wednesday evening, said paramedics.
Netcare 911 spokesperson Mark Stokoe said the incident took place about 18:00 in Mint road in Fordsburg.
The man driving the vehicle was shot through the vehicle door, apparently by hijackers, and was hit in the thigh.
He lost control of the vehicle and collided with the pedestrians, a woman and a four-year-old child.
"The impact was severe," said Stokoe.
"The woman was declared dead on scene by paramedics having sustained severe injuries, primarily to her head. The child also sustained severe head injuries and was transported in a critical condition to Johannesburg hospital by Netcare 911."
The driver was taken to Milpark hospital in a stable condition.
