Residents march against crime
01/06/2007 20:41 - (SA)
Durban - More than 2 000 people marched in Durban's Amanzimtoti suburb in protest against crime on Friday.
Superintendent Vincent Mdunge said that the march had been peaceful and a memorandum was handed over to the Amanzimtoti police station commissioner.
There had been an attempt to hand the memorandum to the eThekwini municipality, but no one was on hand.
The Democratic Alliance's eThekwini caucus leader John Steenhuizen accepted the memorandum on the city's behalf and promised to forward it to the city's management.
He said: "People here are angry with an administration that seems to be more interested in changing names than dealing with crime."
However, as Amanzimtoti residents were marching against crime three opportunistic burglars were seen breaking into a house less than a kilometre from the march.
Police were called, including the police Dog Unit and a police helicopter, and two of the men were arrested.
Netcare911 spokesperson Chris Botha, said he had been called from the march to treat one of the burglars who was injured.
Amanzimtoti SAPS police spokesperson Captain Chantal Naidu said the break-in "happened two roads away".
"I think they thought police would be caught up with the march against crime and abuse, and that we would not intervene."
