Johannesburg - Sandton motorists were shocked when a road rage incident got badly out of hand and a truck driver attacked another driver with a panga, leaving the man with a wound to the right side of his head and a fractured femur.
Netcare spokesperson, Nick Dollman told News24 that the fight happened at 09:18 on Friday. "It is unclear what sparked the incident but according to witnesses a man driving a truck and another man in a car were arguing," he said.
It is presumed that some sort of accident led to the fight between the drivers.
The truck driver claimed the other man started the fight, but Dollman said they were both blaming each other.
The incident happened at the busy intersection on the corners of William Nicol and Bally Clare drive in Bryanston, Sandton. According to witnesses, the men began arguing in the road. "This then turned physical and a fight ensued," said Dollman. "One man the fetched a panga and hit the other man in the head."
Dollman said the man was not in a critical condition but had sustained "serious injuries".
According to Dollman, the leg injuries the car driver sustained did not appear to have been inflicted with the panga. "It was as a result of impact, he wasn't stabbed," he said. "He either fell or the man jumped on him"
Excessive force
Dollman pointed out that a lot of force must have been used as it normally took a car going at 40km an hour to break a person's legs.
The truck driver, who was driving a truck for a furniture manufacturing company, did not sustain any injuries. He was restrained by security guards as Netcare paramedics rushed the injured man to hospital.
The fight occured close to the entrance of the Bryanston Shopping Centre, and the shopping centre's private security guards were on the scene restraining the men when Netcare arrived. "Most of the drama was over when we got there," said Dollman.
News24 was unable to confirm on Friday whether police had investigated the incident.
