Johannesburg - Star swimmer Ryk Neethling's mom, San-Marié, has been punched in the face and threatened with a knife during a smash-and-grab robbery in Johannesburg.
Ryk Neethling snr, his wife and their daughter, swimmer Jean-Marié, were attacked at a traffic light in Beyers Naudé Drive on Monday night.
San-Marié has a bruised face from being punched by the robber and she suffered cuts from the glass when he smashed in the passenger window.
The Neethlings are in Randburg to support their daughter Elsje, a reporter at Volksblad, who is in hospital. She had brain cancer when she was a child and a tumour has been found in her back. The tumour could possibly be malignant, doctors told the family.
Soon after hearing the bad news, the couple went to OR Tambo International Airport to collect Jean-Marié.
Jean-Marié, who is in matric in Bloemfontein, had stayed behind to write her mid-year exams.
The robber pounced when the Neethlings were heading back to the hospital.
"We stopped at the red light at the first robot on the Beyers Naudé off-ramp. "It sounded like a rifle-shot when the window next to me broke. "The next moment I was grabbed by the robber," San-Marié said.
"He hit me with his fist. We didn't know if he wanted to hijack us, or what he wanted. "When I saw his knife, I realised I'd have to give him something. "I handed over my cellphone before Ryk sped off.
