Brakpan - The "one and only" Naas Botha has lost his slow but trustworthy steed to thieves.
"I want my "Donkie" back.
"And if they've damaged him, they'll have to pay up."
Botha, who is 101 years old, had his white Isuzu-bakkie stolen about a fortnight ago in Wadeville on the East Rand.
The bakkie was christened "Donkie" because it "could work very hard, but it doesn't go very fast".
Botha has lived in the same house in Gardner Avenue for 32 years, after moving to Brakpan in an ox-wagon in 1933.
Botha, who said at his birthday party earlier this year that he was the first and only Naas, says he's missing the faithful bakkie that he drove himself until four years ago.
"I got shingles in my foot and that's why I can't drive anymore," he said.
Since then, his son-in-law Len Mareé has been using the bakkie.
The bakkie was a present from his son Corrie 15 years ago.
"I got it on July 14 1992, but now it's gone. I really loved that old bakkie. Now thieves are driving round in it"
Botha said he never went "too far" with his "Donkie".
"I would mostly cruise around in this area with it. We never went further than Mafikeng or Pretoria."
Because "Donkie" could not go fast, Botha never had trouble with speeding fines.
"It was a bit on the slow side, so I never got a ticket for speeding."
"I picked up a fine once when I went the wrong way in a one-way street."
"I pray that the Lord will bring my bakkie back. I believe He will."
