Johannesburg - A 22-year-old unregistered traditional surgeon was arrested for illegally circumcising two boys in Libode, the Eastern Cape health department said on Saturday.
Spokesperson Sizwe Kupelo said police and health department officials arrested the man in Nkanga village on Friday.
Meanwhile, police were searching for another unregistered traditional surgeon who allegedly circumcised 24 underage boys in Mthombe on Friday.
"The bogus traditional surgeon is popularly known as Ziyamqwenga, which implies that he is killing them (the boys)."
Kupelo said three of the boys were taken to hospital with serious complications.
He said 24 cases had been opened against Ziyamqwenga.
In Port St Johns, 19 underage boys were circumcised and several cases were also reported in Mount Elliff.
The provincial health department had deployed 40 4x4 bakkies to deal with the situation.
"The department appeals to the community to assist in ensuring that these occurrences are curbed and perpetrators are brought to book," Kupelo said.
He said his department would ensure that circumcisions were conducted in a proper way.
