Medic hurt in ambulance crash
12/06/2007 07:50 - (SA)
Johannesburg - An ER24 paramedic was critically injured on Monday night when the ambulance she was driving collided with a minibus and a car east of Johannesburg.
ER24 spokesperson Werner Vermaak said the paramedic had been driving to a base station in Kempton Park at 22:00 to pick up her partner for the night's duty.
He said a silver Hyundai Jazz travelling in the opposite direction rolled across the road.
The ambulance and a minibus travelling in front of it tried to avoid the car, but all three vehicles collided on Modderfontein road.
He said the car came to a halt in the emergency lane of the six-lane road. The ambulance and minibus were in the fast lane. The entire road had since been closed to traffic.
Vermaak said the paramedic sustained multiple fractures, facial and head injuries in the crash and was in a critical, but stable condition in Benoni's Glynnwood Life Hospital.
The driver of the car was seriously hurt and was taken to a clinic in Kempton Park.
The minibus driver sustained minor injuries, but had also been taken to hospital for treatment.
He said Johannesburg metro police officers were on the scene and would investigate the accident.
