Vendor protest turns violent
18/06/2007 16:02 - (SA)
Durban - Police have used water cannons and rubber bullets to disperse street traders protesting in the Warwick Triangle area against the arrest of four of their fellow vendors.
The traders, angry over the arrest of four vendors who apparently did not have licences to trade, took to the streets, stoning police, passing traffic and police vehicles.
Police spokesperson Michael Read said four police officers were injured.
The spokesperson for the eThekwini metro police, John Tyala, said that two metro policemen, who had made the initial arrests, were also injured.
All six have been taken to hospital and are reported to be in a stable condition.
Police sealed off the area as a running battle between police and an estimated 2 000 people ensued.
Read said the 20 arrested people would be charged with public disturbance.
