Two arrested for farm attack

Kimberly - Two men have been arrested after a couple were attacked in a remote farming district near Garies in the Northern Cape, police said on Wednesday.
Superintendent Mashay Gamieldien said the attack on the elderly farm owner and his companion happened when they arrived home on Tuesday about 11:15.
"The suspects were waiting for the 78-year-old farm owner and his 47-year-old companion to return home," she said.
"Upon their arrival the two victims were assaulted and attacked with knives and screwdrivers and forced to open the safe."
The two robbers escaped with a firearm, ammunition, an undisclosed sum of money and the couple's 1996 Toyota Hilux bakkie.
A search followed, and about 18:00 on Tuesday two suspect were arrested while hiding in bushes 20km from the scene of the crime.
"Police also recovered the stolen Toyota Hilux deserted in Samsamshoek informal settlement at Nuwerus as well as the firearm and a portion of the stolen cash," Gamieldien said.
Commendations for swift conduct
The two suspects, aged 30 and 49, will appear in Garies Magistrate's Court on charges of housebreaking and theft, theft with aggravated circumstances, and illegal possession of a firearm and ammunition.
The victims were admitted to hospital for medical treatment but were later discharged.
The Northern Cape police's Commissioner Miriam Mbombo has commended the officers for their swift conduct in apprehending the suspects.
