20/06/2007 17:40 - (SA)
Johannesburg - Five people have been arrested after crashing into a police vehicle following a robbery in Goodwood in the Western Cape.
Police spokesperson Siphokazi Mawisa said the men, aged between 20 and 30, had allegedly robbed a man at gunpoint of R30 000.
They then fled in a BMW but the robbed man got into his own vehicle and followed them. The alleged robbers collided with the police car as they tried to evade their pursuer.
After the collision, they attempted to get away on foot and two of them shot at the police. The police, however, were able to overpower the men and arrest them.
No injuries were reported in the shooting or the crash.
Police confiscated two firearms.
The men are scheduled to appear in the Goodwood Magistrate's Court on Friday, on charges of armed robbery, possession of illegal firearms, attempted murder and reckless and negligent driving.
